Shortparis

Shortparis is a Russian experimental music group founded in 2012 in Saint Petersburg. The band was started by musicians who had previously collaborated in the indie‑rock group Fools On Time Square (originally from Novokuznetsk): Nikolai Komyagin (vocals), Alexander Ionin (bass, guitar, bayan), and Pavel Lesnikov (drums, sampling). Later, St. Petersburg natives Danila Kholodkov (percussion, drums, later bass) and Alexander Galyanov (keyboards, guitar) joined the line‑up. The name «Shortparis» (pronounced «shortparis») was inspired by the film Shortbus and symbolises the difficulty of expressing one’s inner world and emotions without distortion through music — literally, a «truncated» or «cut‑off Paris».

Musically, Shortparis define their style as post‑pop, pop‑noir, and avant‑pop, positioning themselves as an alternative to the mainstream music scene. Their sound blends elements of post‑punk, electronic music, avant‑garde, and industrial, often featuring dramatic vocals, aggressive rhythms, and unconventional arrangements. Early releases like the debut album Docheri (2013) combined French chanson influences with dissonant, raw energy, while later works — such as Paskha (2017), Tak zakalyalas’ stal (2019), and Yablonny sad (2021) — shifted towards Russian lyrics and deeper engagement with social and historical themes. The group is also known for incorporating literary references, including works by Osip Mandelstam and Andrey Voznesensky, into their music.

Shortparis are equally celebrated for their striking live performances, which often take the form of contemporary art performances rather than conventional concerts. They have staged shows in unconventional venues — from abandoned boiler rooms to courtyards — and experimented with visual and spatial elements, such as on‑stage screens projecting real‑time footage. The band has performed at major festivals (Tallinn Music Week, SKIF, STEREOLETO, OFF Festival) and opened for international acts like The Kooks and alt‑J. They’ve won several awards, including the Golden Gargoyle Prize (2016) and the Sergey Kuryokhin Award (2018). Over time, Shortparis have evolved from an underground curiosity into a significant voice in Russian alternative music, known for their bold artistic vision, social commentary, and willingness to challenge both musical and performance norms.
