Novgorod Republic

The Novgorod Republic (Russian: Новгородская республика) was a medieval city-state in northwestern Rus', centered on the city of Veliky Novgorod (Great Novgorod). Existing from approximately 1136 to 1478, it stands as one of the most remarkable political experiments of the European Middle Ages — a commercial republic governed not by a hereditary monarch but by a popular assembly, the Veche (вече, "council"), in which free citizens elected their princes, mayors, archbishops, and military commanders, and could depose them at will. It was the only major Rus' polity to escape direct Mongol subjugation, preserving its institutions, Orthodox faith, and commercial independence for over three centuries before falling to the rising power of Moscow.
