Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi arrived in the Jordanian capital on October 16 as part of a regional tour aimed at de-escalation in the West Asia region, as Israel presses ahead with its deadly aggression against Lebanon and the Gaza Strip.
Araghci met and held talks with senior Jordanian officials and discussed the latest regional developments to try to find ways for ending the brutal attacks of the Israeli regime against Palestinian and Lebanese civilians.
In a post on his X account earlier in the day, Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei wrote that Iran’s diplomacy stands for the promotion of peace and stability in the region, adding that in the continuation of consultations with the countries of the region, the Iranian foreign minister will also travel to Egypt and Turkey in order to help “put an end to genocide, crimes and war.”
The meeting is part of a series of interactions between Jordan and Iran, a sign of closer ties and heightened cooperation in a time when the region is shifting towards a new political order.
The visit came at a day after the Jordanian Deputy Prime Minister, Ayman Safadi held an urgent telephone conversation with U.S. Secretary of State, Antony Blinken (October 15), „to discuss the urgent efforts to de-escalate the current crisis in the region and ensure immediate and sufficient humanitarian aid to Gaza and Lebanon”.
During the call, Safadi emphasized that halting the Israeli aggression on Gaza is the first step toward de-escalation. He also stressed the importance of stopping the aggression in Lebanon and called for the full implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701.
Also on October 15, King Abdullah received a delegation from the US House of Representatives Armed Services Committee headed by Representative Mike Rogers. The meeting covered recent developments and ways to strengthen the strategic partnership between Jordan and the United States, according to a Royal Court statement.
His Majesty warned of the repercussions of the continued Israeli violence against Palestinians in the West Bank, and the violations of Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem. The King reiterated the need to step up international efforts to stop the Israeli war on Lebanon, calling for respecting Lebanon’s sovereignty and protecting its security and stability, according to the statement.
