Valery Evgenyevich Shambarov (born 1956, Валерий Евгеньевич Шамбаров) is a Russian writer, historian, and public figure, known for his works on Russian and Soviet military history, political history, and national identity. He was born in the town of Berdyansk, Ukrainian SSR (now Ukraine), and later moved to Russia. Shambarov holds a degree in engineering but gained prominence as an author and commentator focusing on historical and geopolitical themes. His career took off in the 1990s, when he began publishing extensively on topics related to the Russian state’s development, patriotism, and the ideological foundations of Russian society.

Shambarov’s body of work includes over 30 books, many of which have been reprinted and translated into several languages. Among his best‑known titles are “Betrayal of the Generals” (Предательство генералов), “Russia and the West: Two Worlds — Two Paths” (Россия и Запад: два мира — два пути), and “Patriotism: History of a Great Idea” (Патриотизм: история великой идеи). His writing often emphasises the uniqueness of the Russian civilisational model, explores the role of the Orthodox Church, and analyses the impact of foreign influences on Russian history. He frequently addresses events such as the Russian Revolution, the Civil War, the Great Patriotic War, and the collapse of the USSR, offering interpretations that align with a patriotic and conservative worldview.

Beyond his literary output, Shambarov is active as a public speaker and media commentator. He participates in radio and television programs, writes articles for newspapers and online platforms, and gives lectures on history and current affairs. His works are popular among readers interested in national history from a traditionalist perspective, though they have also drawn criticism from some academic historians for their polemical style and selective use of sources. Despite this, Valery Shambarov remains a notable voice in contemporary Russian historical discourse, shaping public understanding of Russia’s past and its place in the modern world.
