Sergey Malkin

Sergey Malkin is a rising force in contemporary cinema, born on March 23, 1996, in Nizhny Novgorod. His path to filmmaking was anything but linear; he initially struggled within the rigid structures of traditional education, dropping out of two different institutes—including a program in television and radio production—before finding his true calling. His breakthrough came in 2018 when he moved to Moscow to study under the renowned director Alexey Popogrebsky at the Moscow School of Cinema. This period was transformative, allowing Malkin to refine a style that blends raw, documentary-like intimacy with a sharp, empathetic gaze on the absurdities of daily life.

Malkin first caught the industry's attention with his student short film, Limescale (Накипь, 2020), which earned a spot at the prestigious Kinotavr festival. He continued to build his reputation for personal storytelling through subsequent projects like Vetiver (Ветивер, 2023)—produced with the support of the START streaming service—and The Last Movie About Love (Последний фильм о любви, 2024). Throughout these early works, Malkin established himself as a director who favors authenticity over artifice, often drawing from his own lived experiences to populate his scripts with characters that feel strikingly human and uncomfortably relatable.

The pinnacle of his career arrived with his 2025 feature debut, Yura Was Here (Здесь был Юра), which solidified his status as a major new voice in cinema. The film, which tells the semi-autobiographical story of three musicians caring for a man with a disability, was inspired by a real-life period in 2021 when Malkin faced a similar domestic crisis. Yura Was Here became a critical phenomenon, sweeping the Mayak Film Festival with the Grand Prix and earning the White Elephant award for Event of the Year. By early 2026, Malkin’s work has proven that there is a deep hunger for stories that prioritize quiet, observational humanism over conventional spectacle, marking him as a defining filmmaker of his generation.
