Akira Kurosawa
Akira Kurosawa (March 23, 1910 – September 6, 1998) was born in Tokyo, Japan, into a samurai family. His father, Yu Kurosawa, was a former samurai, and his mother, Shimi Kurosawa, was a traditional housewife. He received strict upbringing, learning kendo and calligraphy, but was also passionate about painting and aspired to become an artist. In 1933, his elder brother, Heigo Kurosawa (a silent film narrator), committed suicide due to career setbacks, an event that became a turning point in Kurosawa's life. The following year, he joined PCL Film Company, the predecessor of Toho Films, and apprenticed under director Kajiro Yamamoto, gradually rising from third assistant director to independent director.
