Achim von Borries

Achim von Borries (born November 13, 1968, in Munich, Germany) is an acclaimed German film director, screenwriter, and producer. He studied at the prestigious Deutsche Film- und Fernsehakademie Berlin (DFFB), where he honed his craft and began developing the distinctive visual and narrative style that would define his career. His early work quickly attracted attention, establishing him as a talented voice in contemporary German cinema with a keen interest in historical and socially charged storytelling.

Von Borries gained wider recognition with his 2004 film Was nützt die Liebe in Gedanken (What Good Is Love in Thought), a provocative period drama based on a true story, and his 2011 feature Vier Tage im Mai (Four Days in May), a sensitive portrayal of German-French reconciliation at the end of World War II. He has also contributed as a screenwriter to notable films such as Alone in Berlin (2016) and Ich und Kaminski (2015), showcasing his versatility across genres ranging from war drama to literary adaptation.

Perhaps his most internationally celebrated achievement is his deep involvement in Babylon Berlin, the critically acclaimed historical crime series set in 1920s Berlin. Alongside longtime collaborator Tom Tykwer, von Borries co-created the show and directed its second season while writing seasons two through four. The series earned widespread praise for its lavish production, gripping storytelling, and historical authenticity, cementing von Borries' reputation as one of Germany's most accomplished and inventive filmmakers working today.
