Chen Yue 陈悦

Chen Yue, a celebrated Chinese virtuoso of the dizi and xiao, has emerged as a pivotal figure in preserving and innovating traditional Chinese instrumental music. Born in Hangzhou, she is the last direct disciple of Zhao Songting, a revered southern-style dizi master, and has dedicated her career to reviving the spiritual and technical depth of Chinese bamboo flute performance. A trailblazer in her field, she became China’s first female master’s degree holder in dizi performance and released her debut solo album, Qing Zhu, in 2000, showcasing her emotive and technically refined style. Her academic and artistic journey, marked by rigorous training at the China Conservatory of Music and a rare early appointment as a professor, has positioned her as both a respected educator and a cultural ambassador.

Chen Yue’s influence extends globally through her prolific recordings, international performances, and cross-cultural collaborations, including a Grammy-nominated album with Michala Petri that fused Eastern and Western musical traditions. She has performed with prestigious ensembles across over 30 countries, bringing ancient Chinese melodies to global audiences while pioneering modern interpretations. Beyond performance, she has advanced music education, judged major competitions, and published scholarly works on dizi and xiao culture, cementing her legacy as a bridge between tradition and innovation. Nicknamed the “Poetic Beauty of Chinese Music,” Chen Yue continues to shape the future of Chinese instrumental artistry, honoring its heritage while inspiring new generations through her emotive mastery and intellectual rigor.
