凤凰传奇 Phoenix Legend

Phoenix Legend is one of the most iconic and beloved pop music duos in China. The group consists of female lead vocalist Yang Wei Linghua, who hails from Inner Mongolia, and male lead vocalist Zeng Yi, who comes from Hunan Province. The duo first crossed paths in 1998 at a nightclub in Shenzhen, where Linghua was working as an electrical appliance saleswoman and Zeng Yi as a radio factory worker. Inspired by the South Korean duo Clon, they formed an early iteration called "Cool Fire" and began performing at entertainment venues across the Guangzhou-Shenzhen region, marking the start of their musical journey.

The release of the song Above the Moon in 2003 proved to be their breakthrough moment. The track masterfully blended soaring folk-style vocals with hip-hop rap elements, and their unique sound quickly captured widespread attention. In 2004, they signed with Peacock Records and officially rebranded as "Phoenix Legend." The following year, they participated in the CCTV talent show Avenue of Stars, where they secured the runner-up position. Shortly after, they released their self-titled debut album Above the Moon, officially launching their professional career in the music industry.

From there, Phoenix Legend skyrocketed to nationwide fame with a string of catchy, upbeat hits such as Most Dazzling Ethnic Wind, Free Flying, and Moonlight over the Lotus Pond. Their music seamlessly fuses ethnic folk elements with pop and electronic dance rhythms, creating a highly recognizable "ethnic wind" pop style. Though initially labeled by some as "folksy" or unsophisticated, their massive grassroots appeal proved undeniable—they have performed at the CCTV Spring Festival Gala twelve times and even became the first Chinese act to have their song played as warm-up music during an NBA game. Today, their influence transcends both age and social circles, with a devoted fan base that ranges from elderly square-dance enthusiasts to younger generations of listeners.
