Manele
Manele is a modern Romanian music genre situated at the crossroads of Balkan, Middle Eastern, and Roma musical traditions. Combining oriental melodic structures, electronic production, and dance-oriented rhythms, it reflects long-standing cultural exchanges across Southeastern Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean. The genre emerged prominently in post-socialist urban environments, where traditional motifs merged with contemporary pop music.
Within a broader Eurasian context, manele represents more than entertainment—it functions as a cultural and social marker, expressing themes of identity, mobility, aspiration, and marginalization. Its evolution parallels similar urban folk-pop genres across the Balkans and the Middle East, making it relevant for comparative cultural analysis and regional music studies.
