“The Western Sky” (Persian: آسمان غرب) is an Iranian aerial war film directed and written by Mohammad Asgari and produced by Habibollah Valinejad. This work is a joint production of the Farabi Cinema Foundation and the Soureh Cinema Organization, with the participation of the Islamic Republic of Iran Army. It was first unveiled at the 2024 Fajr Film Festival, where it earned six nominations and won three awards, including the Crystal Simorgh for Best National Perspective.
The story revolves around the life of Martyr Ali Akbar Shiroodi, a helicopter pilot in the Iranian Army Aviation during the early days of the Iran-Iraq war. With Milad Keymaram playing Shiroodi and Amirhossein Arman portraying Hossein Adabian, the film focuses on the bravery and sacrifices of military heroes, offering a dramatic narrative of the battles and the resilience of the pilots and local people in the Sarpol-e Zahab region. The powerful soundtrack by Masoud Sakhavatdoost and the sharp editing by Meysam Molaei contribute to the film’s intense atmosphere.
From the critics’ perspective, “The Western Sky” is notable for its special effects, precise aerial scenes, and its nationalistic, heroic storytelling, marking a significant return to the Iranian war-action genre. Some criticisms have been directed at the film’s overly slogan-like dialogues and the rapid editing of battle scenes, which at times disrupt the viewer’s immersion. Nevertheless, the film has been well-received by audiences and strongly supported by institutional backers, including mobile and university screenings, highlighting its importance in the landscape of contemporary Iranian war cinema.
