Putin and Pezeshkian talk in Kazan | Strategic cooperation, economic partnership | BRICS 2024

Russian President Vladimir Putin and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian held a meeting in Kazan on the sidelines of the BRICS 2024 summit. The Russian leader noted that relations between Russia and Iran are “on the rise.” In particular, Putin recalled the recent conversation in Ashgabat, where the main aspects of bilateral cooperation and the most pressing regional topics were considered.

“Most importantly, the mutual course for the all-round strengthening of our ties was confirmed. They are on the rise, they are genuinely friendly, constructive,” the Russian president said. Soon, according to him, the results achieved will be consolidated by a new large interstate Treaty on Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between Russia and Iran.

The two also discussed the situation in Syria and the Middle East as a whole, as well as the state of affairs in Transcaucasia. “The approaches of Russia and Iran to the global agenda are close or completely coincide,” the Russian president stressed.

In turn, Pezeshkian noted that the date of signing a comprehensive Treaty will be determined in the near future. “Our relations in various spheres – economic, political, cultural – continue very well, and I am sure that we will be able to sign this treaty soon,” he said. In addition, the Iranian president noted that relations between the countries are strategic. “It is in the interests of our states to move forward together,” the Iranian leader stated.

The Russian president placed great importance on strengthening economic cooperation, saying the joint commission for economic cooperation led by the energy ministers of Russia and Iran plays a big role in this regard.

Putin said a priority is to implement major joint projects such as developing Iran’s railway infrastructure within the framework of the North-South International Transport Corridor and constructing the second and third phases of the Bushehr nuclear power plant.
