Луна is the stage name of the Ukrainian singer Kristina Bardash, and “Дельфины” arrived as a single on 26 July 2019, later folded into her studio album Транс (Trance). The song was released as a single from the forthcoming album, with an accompanying video directed by Andrey Rubets and shot partly on the Indonesian island of Bali and partly in Kyiv. Stylistically the track sits within the dreamy, synth-driven idiom that Луна has cultivated across her catalogue, where outlets variously file her work under pop and Russian alternative. The result is a piece that feels both intimate and slightly hallucinatory — an appropriate texture for a lyric preoccupied with dreams, water, and the slow dissolution of trust.
At the centre of the song is a single extended metaphor that the artist has explained in unusually direct terms. In her own account, she sings about her feelings through metaphors of nature and the elements, and the dolphins represent someone’s desires that crave her reciprocity — desires she no longer believes in. This framing is essential, because without it the recurring image of dolphins wanting to enter “my sea” risks reading as merely whimsical. Understood as the unwanted advances of a former lover, the conceit becomes pointed: the sea is the speaker’s emotional interior, and the dolphins are appetites pressing for re-admission to a space that has been deliberately closed.
The lyrics are organised as a sustained address to an absent “you,” and its narrative arc moves from wounded memory toward firm refusal. The opening verses dwell on grief and recollection — wet eyes, tears on lashes likened to a bottomless ocean, summer swings against a blue sky, faces remembered on a stormy day. From this elegiac register the speaker pivots to accusation, naming the beloved’s behaviour as a “cold and cruel game” that gambled her soul away. By the final section the tone has hardened into something close to verdict: love is described as the addressee’s mistake, and the song ends with a quiet, decisive farewell.
Several devices give the writing its coherence. The most conspicuous is anaphora, particularly the repeated insistence “I did promise, I did promise” and “I did tell you,” which functions less as self-justification than as a kind of ritual closure — the speaker reminding herself that her warnings were issued in good faith. Equally effective is the contrast between two states of water: the fluid, bottomless ocean of early grief and the “shards of ice” against which the lover’s image is said to shatter. The progression from water to ice neatly tracks the emotional movement from openness to refusal, while the recurring motif of having “nowhere left to dive” reinforces that the speaker’s sea is no longer available for anyone’s exploration.
Musically, the song leans on the atmospheric, retro-tinged production that has become Луна’s signature, pairing a measured, almost detached vocal delivery with a hypnotic backing that suits the album title Транс. This restraint is one of the track’s strengths: rather than dramatising the heartbreak with vocal histrionics, the performance keeps an even, cool surface, letting the imagery carry the emotional weight. The effect is a song that sounds calm while describing something painful — a tension that mirrors the lyric’s own posture of someone who has already grieved and is now simply stating her conclusions.
Taken as a whole, “Дельфины” succeeds as a compact study in disenchantment. Its central metaphor is sustained without becoming laboured, its imagery is consistent, and its emotional logic — from longing to accusation to release — is clearly drawn. The chief limitation is that the dolphin conceit can feel oblique on first hearing, and listeners unaware of the artist’s gloss may need the chorus to repeat before its meaning settles. Yet that slight opacity is also part of the appeal, rewarding attention and re-listening. As a single it stands as a representative and well-crafted example of Луна’s particular blend of dream-pop atmosphere and plainly stated feeling.

Больше не любила, боль в любовь вдыхала;

Tears on the lashes — a bottomless ocean.
Summer swings in a sky of blue.
I remember our faces on that stormy day.
I did promise, I did promise.
I loved you, I trusted you deeply.
But your game is cold and cruel.
It gambled my soul away forever.
But your dolphins want into my sea,
Want into my sea, though there was no reason
To hurt me so badly —
Now it is you who will pine.
Remember, darling — I am not free,
There is nowhere left to dive.
Yet your dolphins, so hopelessly,
Want into my sea once again.
Your image shattered against shards of ice.
Someone believes your fairy tales, but not I.
Again you cut open young hearts —
You find something in them and let the poison in.
I did tell you, I did promise —
I loved no longer; I breathed pain into love;
And your dolphins I would not have killed —
I did promise, I did tell you.
But your dolphins want into my sea,
Want into my sea, though there was no reason
To hurt me so badly —
Now it is you who will pine.
Remember, darling — I am not free,
There is nowhere left to dive.
Yet your dolphins, so hopelessly,
Want into my sea once again.
You play these games while a little heart still beats,
But know: whoever leaves will not return.
Remember this smile — there is no more love in it.
Love is your mistake.
You play these games while a little heart still beats,
But know: whoever leaves will not return.
Remember this smile — there is no more love in it.
Love is your mistake. Farewell, my darling.
