Aleksei Alekseyevich German
Алексей Алексеевич Герман (born 4 September 1976) is a Russian film director, and the son of the renowned director Aleksei Yuryevich German. Often referred to as "Aleksei German Junior" in Russia to distinguish him from his father, he has carved out his own distinct path in cinema. He graduated from the Gerasimov Institute of Cinematography in 2001 and began his career at the Lenfilm studio. His feature film debut, "The Last Train" (2003), earned him the "Discovery of the Year" Nika Award. His films often receive international recognition, with "Paper Soldier" (2008) winning the Silver Lion Award at the Venice Film Festival for Best Director, and "Under Electric Clouds" (2015) being screened in the main competition section of the 65th Berlin International Film Festival.
German Jr.'s recent work includes the 2023 war drama "Vozdukh" ("Air"), which focuses on Soviet female fighter pilots during World War II. This film, like much of his work, demonstrates a commitment to realism and a keen interest in historical narratives, though with a different thematic and stylistic approach than his father's films. His filmography also includes "Garpastum" (2005) and "Dovlatov" (2018)
