AGAS
The group was the brainchild of Agas Sarkisyan, an Armenian performer with a gravelly, soulful voice that bridged the gap between Eastern Chanson and Soviet "yard songs" (dvorovaya pesnya).
The Kazan Connection (1989): The first album was recorded in Kazan. The "raw" sound was shaped by the local underground scene, specifically involving Alexey Mutovkin. Mutovkin wasn't just a writer; he was a pivotal producer and arranger who helped define the "Kazan style"—a mix of primitive synthesizers and gritty, street-level energy.
The Lineup: The nicknames Vitya "Khokhol" (keyboards) and Rinat "Tatarin" (guitar) are legendary in the circles of the Kazan underground. They provided the minimalist, upbeat backdrops that contrasted sharply with the dark or absurd lyrics.
The Armenian Transition (1990): The second album moved production to Artik, Armenia, reflecting Agas’s own roots and introducing more prominent "Eastern" melodic structures into the mix.
Style: Profanity as Art
The defining characteristic of Agas was the unrestricted use of profanity (mat). In the late 80s, as censorship crumbled, Agas didn't just push the envelope; they shredded it.
Genre: It is often classified as "Gop-Stop" Chanson or Ironical Folk.
The Vibe: The songs feel like a conversation at a rowdy kitchen party or a back-alley gathering. The melodies are deceptively simple and "catchy," which makes the vulgar and often surreal lyrics even more jarring.
Lyrical Content: The tracks balance between social satire, absurdist humor, and "black" folk tales. They weren't meant for the radio; they were meant for the cassette players of cab drivers and rebellious teenagers.
Key Tracks and the TikTok Revival
While the group’s active peak was short (1989–1991), their digital afterlife has been surprisingly robust.
"Asia – Eurasia": To be historically accurate, the lyrics to this song are actually traditional Russian Chastushkas (humorous, often vulgar folk ditties) that had circulated for decades in various forms. Agas didn't write them, but his recording became the definitive "underground" version. Its recent viral success on TikTok is due to its frantic energy and the "Opa-Opa" hook, which fits the modern trend of "absurdist/retro" aesthetics.
"Romashka Belaya" & "Voditel": These tracks cemented Agas's reputation for taking simple folk motifs and subverting them with cynical, street-smart narratives.
Agas remains a cultural artifact. They were the predecessors to the "shock-rock" and ironic pop movements in Russia. They captured a very specific moment in history—a time when the old world was ending, the new world was chaotic, and the only way to process the madness was through loud, vulgar, and incredibly catchy folk songs.
