On Friday, January 17th, the presidents of the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Russian Federation, Masoud Pezeshkian and Vladimir Putin signed a comprehensive agreement on strategic partnership for long-term cooperation. The agreement was signed in Moscow.
Speaking at a press conference following the signing ceremony, Pezeshkian emphasized that the agreement represents a new chapter in bilateral relations between the two nations, particularly in the economic sphere. He stated that the document was developed based on the interests of both countries and can serve as a roadmap for future cooperation.
The Iranian president expressed the determination of Tehran and Moscow to remove obstacles in areas such as customs tariffs, banking, investment guarantees, and visa matters. He also noted the importance of increasing exchanges through the use of the capacities of the Eurasian Economic Union. Additionally, the document emphasizes the significance of improving cooperation on issues related to extremism, terrorism, and organized violence.
Pezeshkian expressed hope for strengthening ties between the two nations to serve their mutual interests and opening a new chapter of strategic cooperation. He acknowledged Russia’s importance in the global context and its privileged position in Iran’s policy of neighborliness.
During his visit to Moscow, Pezeshkian held positive talks on regional and international cooperation, particularly regarding developments in West Asia, the Caucasus, and Afghanistan. Given the membership of both countries in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization and the BRICS grouping of emerging economies, the leaders emphasized the potential impact of their cooperation on regional convergence and shared interests.
Regarding intelligence cooperation, Putin stated that Russia and Iran adhere to international law and the UN Charter. Both sides share a close stance on developments in West Asia and the Caucasus. They oppose illegal sanctions and interference in the internal affairs of other countries.
Putin highlighted the importance of expanding trade ties and discussed ways to enhance trade exchanges. He expressed hope for a ceasefire in Gaza that would lead to long-term stability. The Russian president emphasized the significance of efforts towards a comprehensive settlement of the Palestine-Israel conflict.
Both Iran and Russia strongly oppose external pressure and emphasize the importance of peace and security in the region, particularly in Syria. Putin voiced support for a resolution to the conflict based on territorial integrity.
The agreement covers all spheres, including defense, counter-terrorism, energy, finance, transport, industry, agriculture, culture, science and engineering.
