On June 17, a delegation from the China Science and Technology Association led by its president, Wan Gang, traveled to Iran to hold talks with Ali Salajegheh, head of the Environment Department.
China Association for Science and Technology | 中国科学技术协会 is an organization made up of researchers and engineers. It has hundreds of branches nationally and internationally and is designed to facilitate communication between the scientific community and decision-makers in the Communist Party of China and the government. Iran’s Department of Environment | سازمان حفاظت محیط زیست is a government organization that answers directly to the President of Iran. As the name suggests, it deals with environmental protection issues and is actually responsible for the country’s national parks and protected areas.
Ali Salajegheh said his country is ready to expand cooperation with the PRC on the environment as part of the comprehensive 25-year partnership. It highlighted several areas of potential collaboration, including combating dust storms, managing wastewater, protecting wildlife, managing air pollution, droughts and wildfires.
Wan Gang and expressed hope for increased cooperation in multiple fields, including environmental protection. He noted the importance of continuing the agreements signed last year by the presidents of China and Iran in the agriculture and environment sectors.
Salajegheh stressed that dust storms are a major problem for both nations and that Iran has a necessary experience in stabilizing the soil and mitigating dust storms. He added that Iran has successfully promoted international cooperation to combat dust storms, which led to the designation of July 12 by the UN as the International Day to Combat Dust and Sand Storms.
Iran wants to develop a strategy for the sustainable exploitation of marine resources, the expansion of maritime trade and the relocation of water-intensive industries to the coastal areas in the south of the country. Salajegheh expressed optimism about the advancement of research and practical cooperation in the field of environmental protection with China.
