The Iranian Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, has stated that the Islamic Republic had expected the ousted Syrian government to demonstrate some flexibility and engage the opposition in the governance process, but this did not occur.

Before the overthrow of the Bashar Al-Assad government, Iran had already concluded that the central government of Syria would face significant challenges in governing the country.

Furthermore, the Iranian diplomat emphasized that Iran has maintained contact with various opposition groups in Syria. He also stated that Iran had suggested to the Assad administration that it was essential for them to engage in political dialogue with opposition groups that are not affiliated with terrorism.

Following the rapid overthrow of the Syrian regime, which occurred within 11 days, opposition forces seized control of major cities, leading to the complete ouster of the government on December 8.

Despite the unexpected nature of these events, the Iranian Foreign Minister expressed no surprise. “I personally did not perceive these developments as surprising,” he said.
