After visits to Ukraine (July 2, 2024) where he held talks with Zelensky and to Russia (July 5, 2024) where he met with President Vladimir Putin, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban arrived in China on July 8 to hold talks with President Xi Jinping.
Hungary considers this diplomatic tour as a “mission for peace”. The initiatives are centered in the first part on encouraging peace talks between Ukraine and Russia and between the European Union and Russia and now, in Beijing, on mitigating the risks of an economic conflict between China and the EU.
It is very important to us that China asks for peace in the world, not war.
VIKTOR ORBAN
Xi stressed that an early ceasefire in Ukraine and a political settlement are in the interest of all sides, saying that the priority is to de-escalate the situation by observing the three principles: not expanding the battlefield, avoiding escalation of fighting and avoiding fueling the flames of war.
Orban and Xi met again 2 months ago, when the Chinese president made an official visit to Hungary.
