Saudi Arabia appointed a new ambassador to Syria on Sunday, May 26th, making this the latest move in Arab rapprochement with President Bashar Al Assad. The new ambassador will be Faisal Al Mujfel, the official Saudi news agency SPA said.
Mr Al Mujfel hopes to “consolidate the bonds of bilateral relations between the two countries”, the agency reported.
Riyadh was at the forefront of an Arab drive last year to rebuild ties with president Al Assad, which were mostly severed after the events in 2011 which led to the Syrian Civil War, Western intervention and the emergence of terrorist groups. The Arab rapprochement with Damascus has had Russian support but no US endorsement.
On the economic side there has been no significant Gulf financial flows into the reconstruction of post-war Syria.
Al-Mujfel expressed his gratitude and appreciation to King Salman bin Abdulaziz and Crown Prince and Prime Minister Prince Mohammed bin Salman for the royal trust in appointing him as the ambassador of his country to Syria.
I am deeply honored by the gracious royal trust and pray to the Almighty to grant me help and success in performing my duties to meet the aspirations of the wise leadership in serving the interests of the Kingdom and strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries.
Faisal Al Mujfel
Al-Mujfel has a military background as he served in the Saudi Armed Forces and was promoted to the rank of Major General in 2019. He was previously appointed as the ambassador to Cameroon in Africa.
