During a meeting with Peng Qinghua, the Vice Chairman of the National People’s Congress and Special Envoy of China’s President Xi Jinping, on Wednesday in Tehran, Pezeshkian labeled Beijing as a strategic partner in Iran’s foreign policy and emphasized that Tehran will not forget China’s assistance in countering the US sanctions.

China has been a friend to Iran in difficult times, Pezeshkian stressed.

The president also stressed the completion and implementation of the major “Belt and Road” initiative and the 25-year partnership agreement between Iran and China.

He also referred to the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) and BRICS as international platforms for interactions between the two countries.

Iran and China signed the landmark 25-year partnership agreement in March 2021 in a bid to strengthen their long-standing economic and political alliance.

The deal officially documents the Sino-Iranian Comprehensive Strategic Partnership that had been announced during a visit by President Xi to Tehran in 2016. It sets the outlines of cooperation in political, cultural, security, defense, regional, and international domains for the next 25 years.

China is Iran’s largest trade partner. Both countries are subject to different levels of sanctions imposed by the United States.

Iranian officials describe Beijing as a “reliable” trade partner for Tehran, stressing that there is “untapped” potential that both countries agree should be utilized to bolster bilateral collaboration.

The Chinese diplomat, for his part, emphasized Beijing’s readiness to implement the 25-year cooperation pact and enhance economic, political, social and cultural collaboration with Tehran.
