Luxembourg’s Foreign Minister, Xavier Bettel, arrived in Jordan on Thursday, August 1, for a meeting with his counterpart, Ayman Safadi. At the joint press conference held after the end of the talks, the two called for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and called for a de-escalation in the region.
The current top priority in the Middle East is “to cease Israeli aggression, stop the humanitarian disaster and avoid catastrophic escalation, for which we hold Israel fully responsible,” Safadi said.
Sadafi condemned the assassination of Hamas Politburo chief Ismail Haniyeh, noting that it could lead to the expansion of the regional war and have a negative impact on regional and international peace and security.
He condemned Israel’s attacks on Lebanon, and called for immediate and concrete action from the international community, as well as from the UN Security Council.
Bettel said Luxembourg was “committed to stopping the war in Gaza, achieving a ceasefire and implementing the two-state solution.” Bettel said that Luxembourg will increase aid and support to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).
