The presidents of Iran and Russia reaffirmed their commitment to supporting Syria in its struggle against terrorism as the country continues to face an increase in terrorist activity in the north.

During a phone call on Monday (December 2nd), the Iranian President, Masoud Pezeshkian, and his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, discussed the current security situation in Syria following recent terrorist attacks in the country.

Both leaders expressed concern about the recent uptick in terrorist activity, which they warned poses a serious threat to the stability and security of Syria and the wider region.

President Pezeshkian noted that the recent ceasefire agreement between Hezbollah in Lebanon and Israel (which Israel considers to be only a ceasefire between itself and Lebanon, not including Hezbollah) has given hope for a peaceful resolution in the region. However, he stated that the continued terrorist activity in Syria, supported by Israel, has put the region back on alert.

We believe that these recent incidents are a part of a larger plan by the US and the Israeli regime to destabilize the region in their favor. However, we are determined to work together to thwart these plots through unity and regional cooperation.

Masoud Pezeshkian

Pezeshkian praised Russia’s efforts to maintain regional peace and stability, and expressed Tehran’s willingness to strengthen cooperation with Moscow.

Regarding the ongoing terrorist activities in Northern Syria, Putin agreed that they undermine the sovereignty and integrity of the country and threaten regional security. He emphasized Russia’s commitment to working with Iran to assist the Syrian government in combating terrorist groups.

Putin also stated that Russia will utilize its diplomatic channels and resources to prevent the spread of terrorism. He proposed holding an emergency meeting under the Astana Peace Process this week to address the situation in Syria.

Earlier statements from the Kremlin indicated that the phone call between Pezeshkian and Putin focused on the worsening situation in Syria. The two leaders expressed unconditional support for Syria’s government in restoring constitutional order and sovereignty. They also emphasized the importance of coordination with Turkey.

Since the start of foreign-backed militancy in Syria in 2011, Iran and Russia have been major supporters of the Syrian government. In 2017, Syrian forces backed by Iran and Russia achieved a significant success in defeating the Da’esh terrorist group. However, some parts of the northern regions of the country remain under the control of militant groups and foreign forces.

On 27 November, terrorist groups led by Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) launched the largest attack in years in Syria, capturing parts of Aleppo and moving south towards Hama.

Despite this, Iran has consistently supported the Syrian government’s fight against terrorism. During a phone call with Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad on Monday (December 2nd), Pezeshkian reaffirmed Tehran’s commitment to enhance cooperation to overcome the current crisis in Syria.
